Red States and Blue States

Primary (and Caucus) Colors

If you live in Iowa or New Hampshire, chances are you've seen your fair share of Presidential candidates' pleas to help make your state blue or red. But why is blue considered the color for Democrats? And why red for Republicans? It wasn't until color television became widespread in the 1960s that election night maps of successes and failures started taking on the bold looks we recognize so widely now. And never had the major television networks agreed on which color represented which of the two parties until they happened to for Election Night, 2000. In case you've forgotten, the results of that voting day were suspended in time due to extremely close results (and a few nasty hanging chads), thereby ingraining 'red' and 'blue' states in our memories as much more than just a one-night visual for results. Stay tuned to see which color most Americans prefer this year.
