Zaha Hadid wins bid for Guggenheim Hermitage Museum
Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid was recently named winner in a bid for the design of the Guggenheim Hermigtage Museum in Vilnius Lithuania, set to open in 2011.
Hadid's design, a sleek silver structure, resembles a space craft, with large glass windows at either end of the building, and small, irregular shaped portals along the top and side--allowing for an interesting distribution of light. Triangular green spaces complement the museum's futuristic appeal, set against a mix of pavement and the natural flow of the river. It will hold some of the world's most interesting art collections, including selected pieces from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York and the State Hermitage Museum, based in St. Petersburg.
The winning submission, along with the other top two contenders, will be on display at the exhibition Imagining the Future: Design Proposals for a New Museum in Vilnius at the Jonas Mekas Visual Arts Center in Vilnius currently running until the end of June.
